AVERBOOK DAVID RAPHAEL, 92, from North Miami, Florida died June 9, 2003 after complications from a stroke. Originally from Duluth, Minnesota. David is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Mae Usem Averbook, his 94 year old sister, Anita Ravage of New York City and his 3 devoted sons Daniel ( Ellen ) from Miami Beach, Arthur of Hollywood, Charles ( Debbie ) Averbook from Boca Raton & Roz Sherman Averbook from North Miami Beach. He was adored by his 7 beautiful grandchildren, Sara, Margo (Yechiel), Amy, Rebecca, Joseph, Jennifer & Michael Averbook. David spent the majority of his career in Austin, Minnesota where he was an inspirational community leader & was the President of many organizations including the Rotary Club, Toastmaster Club, Civic Music Association, PTA, Board of Realtors, Jewish Welfare Fund , and Parks & Recreation Association. He also was on the Board of Directors of the Austin Country Club, the Planning Commission, YMCA, Boy Scouts, & the Minnesota Hotel Association. David had a variety of different businesses including the Averbooks Department store, Averbook Realty, Austin Hotel, the Alcove restaurant but his favorite was Raphael's Stained Glass, a business he started after retiring at 60 & moving to Florida. The business in Miami Shores on Biscayne Blvd grew to become the largest stained glass studio in Miami for almost 20 years, when he finally retired again at 80. David still has his stained glass creations all over Miami & the Caribbean in synagogues, churches, cruise ships, hospitals, hotels & private residences. David was gifted with a photographic memory which he inherited from his father Joseph M. Averbook, who lived to be 96 and an incredible gift of musical ability he inherited from his mother Anna Averbook, who lived to 105. David didn't read music but he could enthusiastically play anything by ear on the piano & organ. He also was an accomplished artist & sculptor and an expert handyman--he could fix practically anything. In his earlier adult life, he enjoyed bowling, golf & was the intramural ping pong champ at the University of Minnesota. He was a wordsmith & could solve the toughest anagrams. At 85 he quickly learned the computer & became the resident graphic artist at Bayview Towers where hehad been living the last 28 years with Mae in North Miami. David's keen sense of humor, music, charity and good deeds impressed everyone. Memorial services will be conducted at 12 Noon, June 11, at Eternal Light Funeral Chapel at 17250 West Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach. Internment to follow at Mt. Nebo, 1:30PM in Miami.
